Should You Resurface, Repair, or Replace Your Asphalt Driveway?

The driveway near your home or commercial property plays a significant role in shaping the initial impression your building creates for guests and visitors. If your asphalt driveway has started showing signs of wear and tear, you are probably wondering what you should do. Do you need a brand new driveway? Or is there a way to fix the existing one?

Keep reading for some useful tips on how to decide whether you need to resurface, repair, or replace your driveway.

Options for an Asphalt Driveway

When it comes to asphalt driveways, there are several options available depending on the extent of damage and the age of the driveway.

Patching

This type of repair is the cheapest. It provides plenty of benefits as it helps protect the asphalt from further damage, prevents dangerous traffic situations, and prolongs the lifespan.

Patching can be broken down into three types: pothole patching, surface patching, and dig-out patching.

Pothole patching is perfect for small cracks, divots, and holes. It consists of filling the crack with a liquid compound.

Surface patching is a good option if the asphalt paving is moderately damaged. Our experts will first remove the top layers of the damaged pavement using a milling process. After cleaning the area, they will pour and level off the new asphalt.

Dig-out patching involves removing the whole section of severely damaged asphalt and replacing it with a new one from the ground up.

Resurfacing

If your driveway has multiple moderate to severe cracks and holes, we would recommend resurfacing, which can last up to 15 years. This technique consists of completely replacing the top layers of asphalt.

Replacing

Is your driveway more than 20 years old? Has its foundation been damaged? In that case, a replacement may be necessary. While this may seem costly, it’s a worthwhile investment because it will help you avoid the vicious cycle of repairs and also help you solve drainage or grading problems.

Weather Considerations

Do you suspect that your driveway needs some work? There’s no better time than the summer months to boost the appeal of your property. Asphalt needs to remain hot while it’s being poured on the ground, and hot weather is perfect for any type of asphalt work.

Certain repairs, such as patching, can’t be carried out in winter when the weather is too cold.
